GREAT BRITAIN The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northen Ireland. It is situatad in the Atlantic Ocean on the Britisch Isles and is divided from the continent by Britisch Channel. GB has about 59 million inhabitants. Its area is about 245 000 square kms. The capital of GB is London. The official language is English. But Scottish, Irish and Welsh are spoken, too. The Queen Elizabeth the Second is the Head of the British Monarchy. The Prime Minister of GB is James Gordon Brown. He is the Head of British Government. GB is a constitutional monarchy. The British Parliament has 2 Chambers: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The national flag is called Union Jack ( The red cross symbolises England, the blue cross Scotland and the white one Ireland). The national anthem is a song „God Save Our Gracious Queen“. The currency in GB is one Pound of Sterling which is divided into 100 pence. England is an industrial country rich in coal and iron. The most important industries are the mining, engineering and textile industry. They are concentrated in the northwestern part of England (Birmingham, Manchaster, Sheffield, Newcastle). In the southeastern part you can see fields, meadows and farms with cattle and sheep. The climate in GB is oceanic with mild winters and cold summers.
